The Route
A trade route older than the kingdom itself.
Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow of the Annapurnas, a high desert kingdom that was closed to outsiders until 1992. We fly into Jomsom and walk north along the old salt-trading route, the same paths used for centuries to move goods between Tibet and the lowlands.
This is where our wild Himalayan juniper is harvested, growing along exposed ridgelines above 4,000m. We work alongside the families who pick it, and visit the apple orchards that give the kingdom its unlikely second harvest.
Nights are spent in teahouses run by the same families, generation after generation. There is no other way to see this place properly.
